Drost, Gerrit Jan.

Gerrit Jan Drost was born on 10 January 1898 at Haagwoud (also mentioned as Aartswoud) He was the son of a Klaas Cornelis Drost (1864 – 1908) Supervisor Draughtsman who who worked for the County Government for the department of Waterworks (Provinciale Waterstaat ). His mothers name was Trijntje Wijdenes (1873 – 1959)
He entered the “Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart” in Amsterdam on 17 September 1913. By this time his father had passed away and thus the articles of acceptances were signed by the mother. As witness was present the uncle Jan Drost who was as well a Supervisor of the Department of Waterworks. He joined the 2 year course, which indicated that he had in his previous education a certain amount of Mathematics and Physics. His passed out as nbr 20 of 57 with good marks for Dutch language, geography and weaponry.

He then joined Holland America and was placed as cadet on 21 July 1915 sailing from Rotterdam to North America. He returned to schol on 29 August 1916. Om 20 Oct. 1916 he passed his exam for 3rdd. officer.
He married on 21 July 1921 at Rotterdam with Pieternella Halk (19 Dec. 1897 – 14 Sep. 1979, daughter of Dirk Halk, blacksmith and Jacoba Heijstek) He had three children, Tiny (22 April 1922 – 1951) son, also named Gerrit Jan (09 Feb. 1924) and Koos (08 Feb. 1933) . (a)
On 12 October 1921 he passed the exam for First Mate / Captain.
By 1940 he was living with his fmaily at 54 Ribeclaan Schiebroek.
On 10 May 1940 he left the country as Chief Officer with the ms Delftdyk, the last HAL ship to escape from Rotterdam when the invasion started.
He was appointed captain (on loan from HAL) Captain of the Dutch Government owned ss Nicholas Maas, but could not take command as the ship was torpedoed while still owned by the British.
He passed away on 8 November 1893 at Rotterdam at the age of 85 years of age.
Captain Gerrit J Drost has the peculiar distinction that he left the Netherlands at the start of World war II on the last ship out (Delftdyk) as chief officer and brought as the captain the first HAL ship back in dutch waters after the end of WWII.
Note: there was another officer with a similar name, Jan Gerrit Drost (born Opperdoes 12 Aug. 1895) He passed away on 11 Aug. 1927 when he was 2nd officer with HAL until 1921.

I, m very interested in the person. Drost. I remember my aunt was married with DROST . He left in the second worldwar, I thougt iT was Sweden or Finland. He never came back, they divorced in 1945 . She got 2 children, daughter and son The son is still living. He must be about 78 years old, he lives in The Netherlands.

Yes,
this is the only photo I have so far. Captain Drost had a family in the netherlands and he returned home after the war and lived in Holland. Drost or Droste is a very common Dutch name, so it would be difficult to find out if there was a relation in this case.

I recognize the picture of my father, G.J. Drost and can inform you that my parents sure did not divorce. They had three children, my sister Tiny and older brother also named Gerrit Jan.
