Captain Hess was my father. His full name was Adriaan Johannes Hess. In the day to day he was called Aad.

He worked his whole life only for a single company the Holland America Line or HAL.

He had his heart set on sailing from a very early age and after completing the hogere zee vaart school in Rotterdam started with the HAL as an apprentice navigator.

He came through the ranks on stuurman and later kapitein op de cruise schepen.

Sailing was his heart and soul.

Sadly he passed away way too early only a few years after his retirement.

    • Thank you for reading my blog and thank you for your post. I sailed for 3 years with your father when he was captain on the Statendam IV and the Noordam and Nieuw Amsterdam. That was between 1981 and 1984 when I was starting out as a 3rd officer with the company. I am still busy with putting his career together and if you do not mind I would like to contact you to if you would like to provide some more information for the blog site.

      Best regards

      Capt. Albert

      Hallo hr Hess,

  2. I had the privilege of sailing as a passenger on the HAL ships several times. Your father was indeed a sailor at heart and commanded the respect and admiration of his crew. He is missed by many. A true professional.

I have a picture with him on Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam, October, 1985. He was the captain on our honeymoon cruise.
