I am still researching his biography as there was also a Jan Gerrit Dekker who was a ships captain between 1910 and 1940,

Betreft de “Almdyk” onder kapitein J.P. Dekker.

Ik zocht hem op in uw rubriek “Captains from the past”, maar kreeg een foto te zien van kapitein J.G. Dekker.
Blijkbaar zijn hun foto’s omgewisseld ?

  I am still in a bit of a muddle with the “Dekkers”. There was an J.G Dekker from 1901 to 1930. Then there was a L Dekker van 1933 until somewhere in the mid 1960’s and there was an J.P Dekker who was captain from somewhere in the early 50’s to somewhere in the late 60’s. The last one is the Dekker we are dealing with here. He was the first Almdyk captain and stayed with here for a long time. Because of saving these people he and the Chief Officer Mr. Abelskamp received the De Ruyter medallion in silver. According to a photo album in the HAL archives in Rotterdam, the photos are correct………. unless they got the Dekkers mixed up. I have thusfar not been able to find any other photos from any of the two, so I do not know who is who either at this moment in time. As soon as I have more information and confirmation I will uploaded the (still very incomplete) bio’s of all of them

This is a photo of my grandfather. He was captain of Holland America Line during the War, and spent time in Canada since he could not come back to Holland during the war. My mother was a little girl at that time. The last commenter I think is correct.
