Jan Leendert Boshoff was the son of Captain Jan Pieter Boshoff who also sailed for Holland America.

Captain J.L Boshoff was promoted to acting captain  in 1971 and transferred with the cargo fleet to Bostrom when the cargo division was sold in 1975.

He was the last chief officer of the ss Nieuw Amsterdam (II) when it went for scrap in 1974.
