I am starting with the Veendam’s and will progress from there until the whole fleet has been covered. I just discovered your blog today, and I am thoroughly enjoying it! Both the technical aspects of running a modern day cruise ship and the historical view of cruising are very well written and fascinating!

Dear Captain Albert,
On Veendam (on your last cruise before vacation) at the Mariner Club Party, I asked you about the bib collar on the sailor’s uniforms. You quite correctly attributed the three stripes as having been awarded by the British Navy. I found that the stripes were awarded for three of Nelson’s victories but I have not learned which battles those were. The collar itself, I found was devised to protect the uniform from the sailors’ pigtails which were coated with tar to help keep the hair in place. The pigtail, in turn, served to keep the hair from being caught in the running rigging.
